Durga Puja is one of the most vibrant and revered festivals in India, particularly celebrated with immense enthusiasm in Assam, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and other parts of the country. Durga Puja is dedicated to Goddess Durga, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. It celebrates the moment when Goddess Durga vanquished the demon Mahishasura, thus restoring peace and righteousness. - Mahalaya marks the beginning of the Puja celebrations, invoking the goddess’s presence.
- Saptami is the first day when Durga’s idol is revealed, and it is marked by special rituals and prayers.
- Ashtami is one of the most significant days of the festival, with the offering of ‘Anjali’ and the performance of ‘Sandhi Puja.’
- Navami brings more prayers, feasting, and cultural events.
- Vijaya Dashami, the final day, represents the culmination of the festival. On this day, devotees bid farewell to Goddess Durga as her idol is immersed in rivers and lakes, symbolizing her return to Mount Kailash.
Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration. It is a social and cultural extravaganza with art, dance, music, and food playing crucial roles. Pandals (temporary stages) are intricately designed, showcasing different themes, from mythological stories to modern social messages and welfare’s. Streets are lined with vendors selling sweets, clothes, and souvenirs, while cultural programs keep everyone entertained.
Anticipation and Excitement
As Durga Puja 2024 approaches, the excitement is palpable across communities. This year, the festivities are expected to be grander, with more elaborate pandals and innovative themes. Many people are already planning their visits to the most famous Puja locations like Kolkata, Guwahati, and Siliguri, where Durga Puja is celebrated with immense fervor. The preparation for this year’s festival has begun months in advance, and the anticipation grows as the day approaches.
In Assam, where Durga Puja is celebrated with the same passion as Bengal, you can expect to see a fusion of Assamese and Bengali cultural practices, making the celebration even more special. From the traditional Dhunuchi Naach (dance with incense burners) to Assam’s distinct food and music, Durga Puja is an embodiment of cultural diversity and harmony.
Our Experience of Enjoying Durga Puja
As someone who grew up cherishing Durga Puja in Tinsukia, Assam, this festival holds a special place in my heart. Durga Puja is not just an event for me—it’s an experience filled with nostalgia, joy, and the warmth of community. In this year (2024), with life being even busier due to work commitments, I still couldn’t resist the pull of the festival.
The day started with a crisp morning, the air heavy with the scent of incense, flowers, and the sounds of the Dhak (traditional drum). I remember stepping out with my family, dressed in new traditional attire, ready to visit the beautifully adorned pandals scattered around town. Tinsukia , Dibrugarh , Sibsagar and Jorhat may not have the scale of Puja’s as like of Kolkata’s / West Bengal’s Puja, but it more than makes up for it with a sense of close-knit community celebrations.
The first stop was our favorite pandal which is in my locality. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in the idol of Goddess Durga were awe-inspiring, and the atmosphere was electric with devotion. As the priest performed the Aarti, I joined hands with hundreds of others to offer our prayers, feeling a deep sense of peace.
The evenings were all about hopping from one pandal to another, taking in the creative brilliance of each one. With friends and family by my side, we indulged in mouth-watering street food—kachori, ghugni, somosa, mishti doi and many more feast’s. The streets buzzed with laughter, chatter, and the occasional burst of traditional songs.
One of my fondest memories this year was dancing with my brothers, and cousins during the Dhunuchi Naach. The rhythm of the drums was infectious, and before I knew it, I was completely absorbed in the moment. For those few minutes, nothing else mattered. It was pure joy, shared with people who were as enthusiastic as I was.
It was bittersweet as Durga Puja came to an end with the final immersion on Vijaya Dashami. Watching the goddess being carried to the river for her immersion, I couldn’t help but feel a mixture of sadness and hope—sadness for the end of the festivities but hope for the coming year, when we will once again welcome Durga Maa with open arms and hearts full of devotion.
In 2024, Durga Puja reminded me of the importance of community, faith, and taking time to celebrate life’s simple pleasures. It was a beautiful experience that left me feeling recharged and connected to my roots.
